Macao logs 873,000 visitors during May Day holiday, up 2.7%

The Macao Special Administrative Region recorded more than 873,000 visitor arrivals during the Chinese mainland’s five-day Labor Day holiday period, an increase of 2.7 percent from the same period last year, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office.

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the MGTO said that the average daily number of nearly 175,000 visitor arrivals recorded during the holidays that ended on Tuesday represented an increase of 10.4 percent from the number logged during the May Day break in pre-pandemic 2019.

In 2019, the Labor Day holiday period lasted four days.

The statement also noted that Macao recorded around 248,000 visitor arrivals on Saturday, once again setting a new record for the single-day arrivals. The previous record was set on February 19 this year, the third day of the Chinese New Year of the Horse, when 227,917 visitor arrivals were recorded.

According to the statement, the 873,000 visitor arrivals recorded during this year’s Labor Day holiday comprised around 725,000 from the Chinese mainland, 94,000 from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, 12,000 from China’s Taiwan region, and 42,000 foreign visitors.

The MGTO said that the number of visitor arrivals from the Chinese mainland represented an increase of 6.9 percent from last year’s corresponding period.

Meanwhile, Macao’s hotels logged an average occupancy rate of 92.7 percent during this year’s Labor Day holiday period, peaking at 98.3 percent on Saturday, the MGTO added.

According to the Public Security Police, Macao saw 203,006 visitor arrivals on May 1 and recorded a high of 247,729 arrivals the following day.

The city logged 182,216 arrivals on the third day of the holidays, 157,214 on the fourth day, and 83,064 on the last day, PSP data showed.
