HONG KONG – The Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has lodged stern opposition to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and other politicians for supporting an anti-China rioter in the city and making irresponsible remarks on his trial.

Hong Kong is a society under the rule of law, and it is a basic principle that laws must be followed and violations of the law must be prosecuted, a spokesperson for the office said on Tuesday.

Jimmy Lai Chee-ying is the mastermind and instigator of the anti-China riots in Hong Kong, whose words and deeds of colluding with the outside world to destabilize the SAR and incite separatism have long come to light, said the spokesperson.

The courts in the HKSAR have tried cases impartially and resolutely cracked down on acts and activities that endanger state security, the spokesperson said, adding that it is a natural act beyond reproach to safeguard national security and legal dignity in accordance with the law.

Certain British politicians have been trying to invent excuses for Lai and to cover up or even glorify his acts with hypocritical double standards, seeking to interfere with the SAR judicial authorities' handling of cases by law and undermine the rule of law of Hong Kong, the cornerstone of the city's long-term prosperity and stability, the spokesperson said.

"Such acts seriously violate the spirit of the rule of law and international norms, and their scheme is doomed to failure."

The spokesperson urged the British side to immediately stop interfering in the HKSAR's judiciary in any form, and stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and other internal affairs of China.
