Police have taken three stray dogs into custody following a fatal attack that claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman in Hong Kong's Yuen Long district on Saturday night.

According to officers, the woman was cycling home along Pok Wai South Road when the animals set upon her. She was pronounced dead after being taken to Pok Oi Hospital.

The three dogs have since been transferred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) for inspection.

Jackie Yip, an assistant director at the AFCD, said the animals would be housed at the department's animal management center, where they would be held and monitored closely.

She added that officers would check the dogs for microchips and, if any were found, use the registered contact details to trace their owners.

Yip said the government was gravely concerned by the recent wave of dog attacks. She urged the public to stay composed when confronted by an aggressive dog, advising them not to make eye contact, to retreat slowly, and to find an alternative route if possible.

In the meantime, police said they had gathered evidence at the scene and would join forces with the AFCD to carry out risk-based patrols in areas where strays are believed to roam, keeping a close watch on the threat they present.
