Mayor: 2 dead in Philippine school shooting

MANILA – A shooting at a junior high school in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines on Tuesday morning left at least one victim dead and nine others injured, while the suspect took his own life on campus, bringing the death toll to two, according to the local city mayor.

According to Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, the attack occurred at around 8:30 am at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University junior high school campus. The suspect, a Grade 7 student, entered the school carrying a rifle and a handgun, opened fire at students and teachers, and then shot himself.

One of the victims has been confirmed dead, while the other nine have been taken to hospital. The campus has been closed, and parents have been arriving to fetch their children, according to the mayor.

Local police are investigating the incident to further determine the suspect's motive.
