Senior officials from the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions on Wednesday lauded the remarkable journey and significant achievements of the motherland over the past 76 years, pledging to further align the cities’ development with the nation’s strategic goals.
They were speaking during celebrations marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
At a grand reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre following an open-air flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said the city will actively leverage its unique strengths under the “one country, two systems” principle to contribute to national development.

Addressing a gathering of local and central government officials, leading business figures, and dignitaries, Lee highlighted ongoing efforts in key areas, such as safeguarding national security, driving economic growth, improving livelihoods, and upholding social stability.
He pledged to advance government and societal reforms to build a more robust economy and adapt to an evolving global environment, as outlined in his latest Policy Address. Lee expressed confidence that, through unity and innovation, the “Pearl of the Orient” will achieve greater prosperity.
Separately in Macao, about 1,320 social dignitaries attended a National Day reception at the Complex of Commerce and Trade Cooperation Platform for China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.
Macao Chief Executive Sam Hou-fai said that the nation’s prosperity has bolstered the city’s confidence in its own progress. He said that Macao will ride on the motherland’s development momentum to seek new opportunities for growth.
Sam said that over the past 76 years, the motherland has achieved remarkable accomplishments, especially in rapid economic development and sustained social stability — foundations that have underpinned Macao’s advancement and prosperity.
This year also marks the start of the Macao SAR’s sixth-term government. Sam vowed to lead his administration in capitalizing on the opportunities presented by the forthcoming 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), and to unite all sectors in building a rule-based, vibrant, “cultural and blissful” Macao.

Official and community activities were held across both SARs to celebrate National Day.
Early in the morning, various institutions in Hong Kong held flag-raising ceremonies. They included the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR and other central government agencies in Hong Kong, local government departments, and universities and secondary schools.
Residents also enjoyed a range of discounts and giveaways at cinemas, stores, eateries, parks, and sports facilities.
In Macao, celebrations included running races and cultural activities such as tai chi fan performances and martial arts demonstrations.
