The Hong Kong Observatory said the Standby Signal No. 1 will remain in force at least until 8 pm Sunday as a tropical depression bringing squally showers to the city started to move away.

The observatory had raised the T1 typhoon signal on Saturday night as the tropical depression came within 800 kilometers of the territory.

“In the past few hours, the tropical depression moved west-northwest steadily, maintaining a distance of over 600 kilometers from Hong Kong,” the HKO said in a weather advisory issued at 4:45 pm.

It said the tropical depression was expected to skirt the southwestern coast of Hainan Island on Sunday night and move further away from Hong Kong.

The observatory will then consider replacing the Standby Signal, No. 1 with the Strong Monsoon Signal, it added.

However, the observatory said the outer rainbands of the tropical depression will continue to bring squally showers and thunderstorms to the territory.

“Showers will be heavy at times. Seas will be rough with swells,” the HKO said, advising members of the public to stay away from the shoreline.
