NAGOYA, Japan – China opened its women's football campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with a 5-1 victory over Hong Kong, China on Monday, with Wang Shuang scoring twice and laying on two assists.
China dominated from the outset, with Chen Qiaozhu breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute with a long-range strike from Wang's lay-off.
The Hong Kong side leveled in the 31st minute when Cheung Wai Ki capitalized on consecutive errors by Si Yu and Xiao Zitong to slot home into an empty net.
China restored the lead seven minutes later, with Si making amends by heading home at the near post following a corner.
Wang took center stage after the break. Three minutes into the half, she sent a lofted through-ball from midfield to set up Wang Yanwen, who beat the keeper to make it 3-1.
Wang Shuang then scored in the 79th and 89th minutes to complete China's convincing victory.
"The win is important for the team, it's not important only for myself.
"[Our strength is] patience. Every team is improving, all we have to do is to give 100 percent against each of them," she said afterwards.
The women's football tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarterfinals.
China is in Group C alongside the Philippines, Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, China. In the group's other match, the Philippines drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan.
