The Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Wednesday expressed deep condolences over the passing of Tung Chee-hwa, former vice-chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee and the inaugural chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The office said Tung was an outstanding contributor to the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle, and a man who lived a life of patriotism, dedication, and service.
Tung died peacefully at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital late Tuesday at the age of 89, surrounded by his family, according to Tung’s office.
In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the CPC Central Committee praised Tung for his lifelong patriotism and deep devotion to Hong Kong, saying he made historic contributions to the city’s smooth return and stable transition. His tenure as chief executive, the office said, marked a pioneering phase in which “one country, two systems” evolved from a visionary concept into a concrete reality.

During his administration, Tung implemented the “one country, two systems” and “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong” principles with a high degree of autonomy, and fully enforced the Basic Law, the office said.
The office added he united the authorities and all sectors of society in successfully addressing a series of complex political, economic and social challenges, while firmly safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests.
The office said Tung’s life was one of patriotism, dedication and service. It also quoted Tung’s famous words, “When Hong Kong prospers, the nation prospers; when the nation prospers, Hong Kong prospers even more”, and said this is a vivid portrayal of his lifelong commitment to the country and the city.
