SHANGHAI – Spain won the mixed relay gold at the World Climbing Challenger Shanghai on Sunday, while host China topped the medal table with three gold medals from the three-day competition.

China and Spain met in the mixed speed relay final on the closing day, but China was disqualified for a false start, handing the title to the Spanish team.

China had dominated the individual and single-gender relay events earlier in the competition, winning both the men's and women's relay titles on Saturday.

In the men's relay final, Chinese pair Ling Yongzhi and Zhou Ziyu won gold in 10.10 seconds, while teammates Long Jinbao and Yu Zexuan took silver.

Zhang Mengli and Zhang Shaoqin claimed the women's relay title for China in 13.68 seconds, with compatriots Mou Yuju and Huang Xinyi finishing second.

Ling also won the men's individual speed title, clocking 4.69 seconds in a field featuring several internationally experienced climbers.

Although China's world record holder Zhao Yicheng and world champion Long Jianguo did not compete, Ling won the title in 4.69 seconds, matching the national record set at last year's Chinese National Games.

The men's field included Japan's Ryo Omasa, a multiple World Climbing Series podium finisher, and Iranian veteran Reza Alipour Shenazandifard, the defending Asian Games champion.

Ling's 4.69-second mark was the Chinese national record at the time, but Zhao has since lowered it to 4.54 seconds this year, setting the current men's speed climbing world record. Only Zhao, Long and former world record holder Samuel Watson of the United States have broken the 4.70-second barrier in international competition this season.

Elizaveta Ivanova, competing as a neutral athlete, won the women's individual speed title.
