HONG KONG – The Hong Kong, China men’s foil team made history on Tuesday after claiming the silver medal in the Men’s Team Foil event at the Fencing World Championships 2026, which is being held at AsiaWorld-Expo.

The team, comprising Ryan Choi, Cheung Ka-long, Harris Ho and Leung Chin-yu, was edged out by world No 1 Italy in a dramatic sudden-death decider, losing 45-44 after a breathtaking comeback by the Italians.

Hong Kong had led for much of the match and, at one point, held an eight-point advantage. Italy’s Tommaso Marini and Guillaume Bianchi then rallied to tie the score and force a decisive final touch.

Despite the heartbreak, the silver medal represents the best-ever result for Hong Kong at the Fencing World Championships, surpassing the bronze medal the team won in 2023.

Following the match, Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui extended her congratulations to the team.

“The team comprising Ryan Choi, Cheung Ka-long, Harris Ho, and Leung Chin-yu, demonstrated outstanding performance throughout the competition, showcasing Hong Kong athletes’ charm and perseverance,” Law said in a statement. “I am proud that they have made history by winning Hong Kong’s first-ever team silver medal in the Fencing World Championships.”
