Hong Kong is expected to see thunderstorms on Friday, as thundery showers develop persistently to the city’s south and over the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, according to the city’s weather forecaster.

It will be cloudy to overcast with heavy showers at times, as upper-air disturbances will bring showers and squally thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong province, said the Hong Kong Observatory.

Under the influence of a northeast monsoon, it will be appreciably cooler and temperatures will linger around 19 to 20 degrees during the day.

“Locally, temperatures over many places this morning (Friday morning) were five to six degrees lower than those of yesterday (Thursday),” the HKO pointed out.

As of 9:30 am, Tate's Cairn and the Peak logged 17.4 and 18.7 degrees Celsius respectively, compared with 23.4 and 23.8 degrees on Thursday, according to the observatory's data.

Noting that it will remain slightly cooler on Saturday morning, the weather forecaster said showers will ease off and Hong Kong will see sunny periods in the following couple of days.

The observatory also warned that the weather will become unsettled again midweek next week as a trough of low pressure is expected to develop.
