The results of the Consumer Council’s “Top 10 Consumer News 2025” voting campaign, which attracted 13,024 voters, were announced on Thursday, with a report about the Kai Tak Sports Park earning the top position.
Since beginning operations in early 2025, the sports park has hosted numerous large-scale events and welcomed over 1 million visitors in less than six months. The news report highlighting this achievement topped the list with 5,515 votes and also claimed the title of “Most Liked” consumer news, attracting 7,530 votes.
Coming in second with 4,831 votes was last year’s announcement by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government on adjustments to the HK$2 (25 US cents) public-transport fare concession for senior residents.
The third-most-voted item was the controversy surrounding the Hot Air Balloon Festival, during which organizers failed to secure licenses for advertised passenger rides because of safety risks. That story received 4,459 votes and was deemed the “Most Outrageous” consumer news with 7,056 votes.
Many entries in the top-10 list reflected daily lifestyle concerns, encompassing topics such as dining and travel, the results showed.

In the food-and-beverage sector, the public expressed concern over the closure of several long-standing restaurant chains, including Ocean Empire, Tai Pan, and Super Star, as well as Deliveroo’s withdrawal from the Hong Kong market.
Three travel-related stories made the list: the adjustments to the “HK$2 Scheme” for senior residents, the cancellation of over 100 flights by Greater Bay Airlines, and the effect of Japan’s earthquake rumors on travel agent and airline businesses.
Cross-border consumption also drew attention, including the overloading of self-pickup points for parcels due to free-shipping for online orders, and the launch of Payment Connect.
As for healthcare-related news, the opening of the first traditional Chinese medicine hospital also generated public interest.
Clement Chan Kam-wing, chairman of the Consumer Council, expressed his gratitude to the voters and media partners, saying the voting numbers clearly showed the public’s high level of concern for their consumer rights.
To further enhance consumers’ access to consumption information, the Consumer Council will launch a mobile app in late 2026 to mark the 50th anniversary of Choice Magazine, enabling consumers to make informed and smart choices anytime, anywhere, he said.
