MADRID -- Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said Saturday the club is working urgently to recover injured top scorer Kylian Mbappe, while stressing he has alternatives in attack if the France forward remains sidelined.
Mbappe, who has scored half of Madrid's goals in La Liga this season, will miss Sunday's home match against Real Betis because of a knee injury and is a major doubt for the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. The tournament opens with a semifinal against Atletico Madrid on January 8, with pressure mounting on Alonso to deliver a trophy.
"We're going to do everything we can to get Mbappe back as soon as possible," Alonso said at a news conference, adding that he could not yet put a timetable on the forward's return.

Alonso said Mbappe's availability would depend largely on how the player feels. "After each match, we assess the player's condition, see how he responds, and then make decisions based on the team's needs," he said. "We have to monitor his progress."
The coach said Rodrygo is set to replace Mbappe in the starting lineup if required. "Rodrygo can play in any of the three attacking positions, right, center or left," Alonso said. "He finished the year in excellent form. We have different options, and he's one of them."
Madrid has not given further details on the severity of Mbappe's injury or confirmed whether he will be fit in time for the Super Cup.
