Hong Kong recorded its hottest day so far this year on Saturday as temperatures in many areas in the city rose to 33 degrees Celsius or above in the afternoon.
"The maximum temperature recorded at the observatory was 33.6 degrees, the highest so far this year," the Hong Kong Observatory said.
The observatory had issued the Very Hot Weather warning at 12:15 pm and urged members of the public to avoid prolonged activities outdoors to prevent heat stroke.
“Drink plenty of water, and avoid beverages containing caffeine or alcohol. If you feel sick, consult a doctor right away,” the observatory said.
According to the HKO website, temperatures in Sheung Shui reached a high of 35.8°C at 1:55 pm while nearly Tai Lung recorded 35.3°C at 2:47 pm.
Yuen Long Park logged a maximum temperature of 34.9°C while the urban districts of Kowloon City and Wong Tai Sin both saw a high of 34.3°C.

On Hong Kong Island, Happy Valley recorded the highest temperature at 33.2°C while Stanley came in second with 32.6°C.
The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health said infants and children, the elderly, pregnant women, those with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and individuals who are overweight should pay special attention as they are more vulnerable to heat stroke.
“Avoid vigorous exercise and prolonged activities like hiking or trekking as heat, sweating and exhaustion can place additional demands on the physique,” the CHP said.
The Home Affairs Department said it opened 19 community halls and centers as temporary heat shelters, providing bedding and sleeping areas for people in need.

The observatory said an anticyclone aloft was bringing generally fine and very hot weather to the coast of southeastern China.
It said that Hong Kong can expect “persistently very hot" and mainly fine weather in the next few days before a few showers arrive in the latter part of next week.
The observatory added that temperatures in the city will range between 28°C and 33°C on Sunday and Monday.
