HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No. 3 typhoon warning signal at 12:20 pm on Saturday as Typhoon Wutip made landfall over Leizhou Peninsula.

Signal No. 3 – which means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometers per hour are expected – will remain in force at least until noon on Sunday, the forecaster said in a 12:45 pm bulletin.

“According to the present forecast track, Wutip will move across the vicinity of the boundary of Guangdong-Guangxi,” the observatory said, forecasting that Wutip will skirt around 300 km to the northwest of Hong Kong on Sunday morning.

With Wutip moving away from Hong Kong and weakening gradually, local winds will moderate progressively Sunday afternoon, it added.

“Unless Wutip maintains a higher intensity over inland areas and adopts a track closer to the Pearl River Estuary, the chance of issuing the Signal No. 8 is rather low,” reads the bulletin.

At Saturday noon, Wutip was estimated to be about 510 km west-southwest of Hong Kong and is forecast to move northeast at about 22 km per hour edging closer to Leizhou Peninsula.

The strong winds associated with Wutip will affect the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary whole day Saturday and Sunday tomorrow.

There will be squally showers and winds will occasionally reach up to gale force offshore and on high ground, the observatory said, advising members of the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

Although Wutip will depart and dissipate on Monday and Tuesday, an active southwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers to the coast of Guangdong, it added.
