HK reports 4,265 new COVID-19 cases, 7 deaths

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 4,265 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths on Saturday, health authorities said.

Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of the Centre for Health Protection, said in a news briefing that the new cases comprised 231 imported infections and 4,034 local cases.

The city’s daily COVID-19 caseload have exceeded 4,000 for the third day in a row.

Chuang noted that the daily infections have been increasing slowly, putting more pressure on public hospitals.

She called on members of the public who have not yet received the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine to do so as soon as possible. She also urged residents to comply with the social-distancing measures. 

Of the 231 imported cases, Chuang said 104 were detected at the airport, 98 at quarantine hotels and 29 after they had finished their quarantine.  

She added that 50 came from the United Kingdom, 14 from Singapore, 13 each from the United States and Thailand, 12 from Germany and 11 from the Philippines.

Chuang also said the authorities have advised three classes at three schools to be suspended for one week after each have reported two or more confirmed cases.

Larry Lee Lap-yip, chief manager (Integrated Clinical Services) of the Hospital Authority, said at the same briefing that seven patients aged between 63 and 96 had passed away. They also had chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, dementia, coronary heart diseases and cancer.

The total number of deaths in the city’s fifth wave of COVID-19 stood at 9,248. 

Lee said 1,275 patients were being treated as of Saturday in public hospitals, including 168 new patients.

Twenty-six of them were in critical condition, including five receiving intensive care, and 22 in serious condition, he added.
