The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region delegation at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan on Friday clinched a silver medal in the men’s foil fencing team event and a bronze in the men’s vault.

The HKSAR team also bagged its first medal in esports at this year’s Asian Games — a bronze in the fighting games event.

These wins bring Hong Kong’s medal haul to 26 — four gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze.

The men’s foil fencing team, comprising two-time Olympic champion Edgar Cheung Ka-long, Ryan Choi Chun-yin, Harris Ho Shing-him and Leung Chin-yu, brought the city another Asian Games silver, following their success in the 2018 Jakarta edition.

They fell 45-36 to Japanese players. The silver also marked the SAR team’s sixth straight Asian Games medal in the event.

In the men’s vault, Hong Kong gymnast Ng Ka-ki won the bronze medal — the city’s first artistic gymnastics medal at this year’s Games.

Ng topped qualifying before posting a two-vault average of 14.116 points in the final.

His competitors — Filipino Carlos Edriel Yulo and Iranian Mahdi Olfati — claimed gold and silver, with averages of 14.599 and 14.533 points, respectively.

Hong Kong’s Shek Wai-hung previously won gold in the men’s vault at the 2014 Incheon and 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

During the fighting games event, esports contestants faced off across video games Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and The King of Fighters XV, and three Hong Kong players — Li Hin-hei, Wong Yuk-cheung and Yeh Man-ho — advanced to the semifinals, where the team lost 3-0 to Japan.

With no third-place playoff, the team’s semifinal run secured it a bronze. The event’s gold medal match will be held on Saturday.

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games run from Sept 19 to Oct 4. This year, the SAR has sent about 580 athletes to compete in 38 sports.
