The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted the amber rainstorm warning signal on Wednesday morning as heavy showers drenched the city.

The observatory issued the signal at 10:05 am, warning that heavy rain, exceeding 30 millimeters an hour, had fallen or was expected to fall over the territory.

“There will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas,” it said, urging members of the public to take precautions and avoid watercourses.

The observatory also urged those who were outdoors to seek shelter as intense gusts reaching 80 kilometers per hour affected Hong Kong.

The amber rainstorm signal was eventually canceled at 3:25 pm but a thunderstorm warning issued at 8:50 am was extended until 6:30 pm.

An active southwesterly airstream will continue to bring showers and squally thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea in the next few days, the HKO said.

The weather in Hong Kong will remain unsettled on Thursday and Friday, but the city can expect sunny periods with a few showers over the weekend, it added.
