Hong Kong’s mega events attracted 550,000 tourists who spent HK$2.4 billion ($308.6 million) during their stay in the city in the first half of 2024, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said Wednesday.

Answering a query at the Legislative Council, Law said that the 110 various mega events held in the first half of the year also contributed a value add of about HK$1.4 billion to the special administrative region.

“Mega events bear strategic significance,” Law said. “We will continue to strive for mega events with both quality and quantity to attract tourists to experience Hong Kong, understand the diversity and vitality of Hong Kong, and make them the best ambassadors to tell the good stories of China and the city in their places.”

She said the mega events not only bring business opportunities and economic benefits to different industries, including hotel, catering, retail, transportation, but also generate publicity for Hong Kong, showcasing its position as a cosmopolitan hub with a rich cultural heritage.

Law said the mega events held in the first six months of the year included 31 cultural, arts and creative events; 14 sports events; 38 conventions and exhibitions; 15 finance, economy, innovation and technology related events; and 12 festivals, celebrations, galas and carnivals.

She added that HK$100 million has been earmarked in the 2024-25 Budget for the Mega Events Coordination Group’s work in boosting mega event promotions for the next three years.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has also leveraged its global network to carry out publicity in the Chinese mainland and overseas, Law said.
