Hong Kong will launch a series of special activities including free rides and admission to exhibitions and discounts at restaurants, to mark the 27th anniversary of the city’s return to the motherland on July 1, the chief executive announced on Tuesday.

To allow residents to enjoy the celebration conveniently, free rides will be available on different modes of public transportation, John Lee Ka-chiu said ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting.

Residents can take the tram, the light rail and MTR shutter bus in the northwestern New Territories for free, while children aged 3-11 are entitled to enjoy free MTR rides on most of the railway lines, he added.

Outdoor and indoor venues managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will be open to the public for free, while admission to most of the exhibitions will also be free at the M+ Museum, Hong Kong Palace Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Science Museum and Hong Kong Wetland Park.

From June 29 to July 1, the Ocean Park will offer up to 30 percent off on its all-day admission ticket. Children and the elderly will be eligible to enjoy a discount of more than 70 percent on the round-trip ticket of the Lantau Island’s Ngong Ping 360 cable car.

On eating and shopping, over a thousand of restaurants will offer concessions.

To mark the occasion, the Hong Kong International Airport, the Domain Mall in Yau Tong, the Arcade in Cyberport, the Sunlight Market in Tung Chung and the Aberdeen Market will also launch various activities and shopping discounts.

On July 1-7, residents can enjoy a 29 percent discount on designated products from the Fish Marketing Organization and the Vegetable Marketing Organization while placing orders through the “Local Fresh” online store or its mobile application.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Police Force will launch a giveaway event of its 180th-anniversary model cars through its social media platforms. The police souvenirs pop-up store at the Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station will also extend its business hour.
