HONG KONG — The Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Thursday lodged strong disapproval and firm opposition to the remarks by certain Western politicians concerning the law enforcement action taken by the Hong Kong police towards Chow Hang-tung and her accomplices.

Remarks lately by the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China, an EU spokesperson and a few Western politicians smeared the human rights and freedom of speech situation in Hong Kong, slandered Hong Kong's national security law, and interfered with the judiciary of the HKSAR, a spokesperson of the Commissioner's Office said.

Freedom of speech is not an excuse for illegal activities, and there is no impunity for any speech that challenges national sovereignty and social stability

Chow is down with an anti-China syndrome and has continued to endanger national security even on remand, the spokesperson said. She teamed up with others to post a series of seditious posts on social media, in a vain attempt to incite public hatred against the Chinese Central Government and the HKSAR government, and to instigate people to organize or participate in illegal activities. Her actions are suspected of violating the crime of seditious intention stipulated in the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, the spokesperson added.

The action taken by the Hong Kong police towards relevant personnel in accordance with the ordinance is a just act to safeguard national security and the rule of law in Hong Kong, the spokesperson said.

"The core essence of the rule of law is that laws must be observed and lawbreakers be held accountable. There is no absolute freedom in the world. Freedom of speech is not an excuse for illegal activities, and there is no impunity for any speech that challenges national sovereignty and social stability," the spokesperson noted.

Hong Kong is part of China and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, which brook no external interference, the spokesperson said

Some external forces are playing dumb and have continuously shown support for anti-China forces in Hong Kong. They interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and seriously violated the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations.

Hong Kong is part of China and Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs, which brook no external interference, the spokesperson said, reiterating that no slander of Hong Kong can change the success of "one country, two systems," and no external intervention can stop the historical trend of Hong Kong's stability and prosperity.

"We urge a few countries and politicians to face up to reality, take an objective and impartial position, earnestly respect the rule of law in the HKSAR, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs," the spokesperson said.
