HONG KONG — Free open-top bus tours of the Northern Metropolis are on offer this month, with the Commissioner for Heritage's Office and Citybus joining forces to run three themed heritage routes on selected November weekends.

The “Traversing Northern Metropolis: Open-Top Bus Heritage Tour,” part of this year's Heritage Fiesta, is designed to let passengers view declared monuments and graded historic buildings from a vantage point rarely enjoyed in daily life, with audio commentary throughout the ride.

“Along the way, ancestral halls, study halls and walled villages with countryside and new towns interweave,” a statement on the official website of the Commissioner for Heritage's Office said, describing a landscape where past and present coexist and urban and rural areas blend.

Every passenger will receive a limited-edition souvenir inspired by this year's theme and the open-top tour.

The tours are free but require pre-registration, as places are limited. Each person may register only once per route, and each registration may include up to two participants. Group size is capped at 50 people per tour on a first-come, first-served basis.

Three routes, three stories

Route 1, “Ping Shan & Ha Tsuen Line — Scholars and Sentinels,” runs Nov 21 (Saturday), departing from opposite Exit H at Yuen Long Station.

The roughly 60-minute ride traces how generations of the Tang clans and local communities kept learning alive through ancestral halls and study halls. It also takes in two former police stations — one now used to train guide dogs, the other repurposed as a heritage gallery. Stops include the Tang Ancestral Hall, the Guesthouse and Yau Kung School in Ha Tsuen (a declared monument), the Former Lau Fau Shan Police Station (Grade 3 Historic Building), the Old Ping Shan Police Station (Grade 2) and the Former Yuen Long Public Middle School (Grade 2).

Route 2, “Sheung Shui & Lung Yeuk Tau Line — Into the Walled Villages,” runs Nov 22 (Sunday), boarding near Exit B2 at Sheung Shui Station.

The approximately 40-minute journey takes visitors to the Tang clan's ancestral hall, Tin Hau Temple and Lo Wai at Lung Yeuk Tau, as well as the Liu clan's study hall and ancestral hall in Sheung Shui. The route shows how two great clans built close-knit communities where worship, education and daily life were woven together for centuries. Highlights include the Tang Chung Ling Ancestral Hall, Tin Hau Temple and the Entrance Tower and Enclosing Walls of Lo Wai (all declared monuments), Liu Ying Lung Study Hall (Grade 1) and Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall (a declared monument).

Route 3, “Sheung Shui & San Tin Line — Old Houses, New Lives,” runs Nov 29 (Sunday), also boarding near Exit B2 at Sheung Shui Station. The route takes roughly 40 minutes.

It features the Hau clan's ancestral halls and the Man clan's mansion, alongside the Lady Ho Tung Welfare Centre, which once served rural communities and continues its mission in a new role today. Stops include Hau Mei Fung Ancestral Hall (a declared monument), the Lady Ho Tung Welfare Centre (Grade 2), Tai Fu Tai (a declared monument) and Hau Ku Shek Ancestral Hall (a declared monument).

How to ride

Buses depart every 30 minutes from 10 am to 5 pm, for a total of 15 tours daily on event days. All routes return to their departure points. Onboard audio guides are available in Cantonese, Putonghua and English.

At selected stops — including the Former Yuen Long Public Middle School, Liu Ying Lung Study Hall, Liu Man Shek Tong Ancestral Hall and Tai Fu Tai — passengers may get off to visit the building and then wait at the same stop for the next bus, which runs roughly every 30 minutes.

Seats are not reserved for passengers re-boarding, who may need to stand on the lower deck. Riders are advised to check the buildings' opening hours and the last bus time.

Registration opens at 10 am on Nov 6 and closes at 5 pm on Nov 10 through the Citybus online platform. Confirmation is instant, and participants should present their confirmation email — printed or electronic — when boarding.
