A US import ban on a select number of Canadian products took effect at 12:01 am Washington time, marking the latest escalation in the trade war between the two countries.

The Trump administration’s latest trade restrictions block imports of motorcycles, alcoholic beverages and whey products from Canada in response to retaliatory tariffs imposed by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government on some US goods.

The move represents the latest salvo in the rising trade conflict between the US and Canada, longtime allies that share deeply intertwined production supply chains across the world’s longest border. The trade affected by the new import bans is relatively small — about $1 billion, according to calculations published earlier this month by Bank of Nova Scotia’s economics department. The US and Canada exchanged almost $900 billion of goods and services in 2025.

In addition to the import bans that took effect overnight, the White House earlier this month slapped a 50 percent tariff on several categories of other items imported from Canada, including certain cheese products, motorboats, golf carts and furniture. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs, which took effect on Sept 8, were in response to so-called Section 338 tariffs the Trump administration imposed on Aug 22, after trade talks collapsed.

President Donald Trump said on Monday he expects Canadian officials to cut tariffs on US goods and say they’re “sorry” within the next three to four weeks. Carney and his cabinet ministers, in contrast, have said they won’t rush to sign a bad deal, and have moved in recent months to expand the country’s trade networks in Europe and Asia.
