BEIJING – Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.43 percent to 3,934.4 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.77 percent lower at 13,617.67 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at around 1.65 trillion yuan ($243.5 billion), down from 1.86 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Bank and electronic component shares were among the leading gainers, while genetically modified crop, agricultural product processing and corn stocks were among the biggest decliners.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.49 percent to close at 3,338.42 points.

The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 1.12 percent lower on Thursday at 1,844.36 points.
