To local youngsters, the stars were inspiring, yet fundamentally out of reach — a grand national dream they could observe but never join. Today, the Tiangong classroom has fundamentally changed this narrative, turning once-distant space ambitions into a tangible, accessible future for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s younger generation.
This unprecedented live space-to-ground engagement is so much more than a science education event. As a landmark achievement of China’s sophisticated manned space program, the Tiangong space station represents the country’s highest-tier technological strength. By opening exclusive real-time space interaction opportunities specifically for Hong Kong’s young people, the central government clearly demonstrates its sincere care for Hong Kong’s innovative development and youth growth. It erases the longstanding boundary between Hong Kong and national aerospace progress, allowing local students to directly share the country’s most advanced scientific resources.
The Tiangong classroom also delivers an immersive national education experience. Aerospace engineering used to seem overly abstract and unreachable for Hong Kong teenagers due to limited local exposure. Through vivid live demonstrations and direct dialogue with astronauts, complicated space technology is transformed into intuitive, firsthand experience. Young participants witness national scientific breakthroughs up close and fully understand the dedicated manned space spirit of perseverance, courage, and selfless devotion. This unique lesson cultivates rooted national identity, nurturing a new generation of Hong Kong youth equipped with both global vision and sincere national sentiment.
A defining highlight of this new era is Lai Ka-ying, Hong Kong’s first astronaut and the city’s pioneering space payload specialist. Her historic space mission powerfully showcases the resilient strength of Hong Kong women. Breaking gender and regional stereotypes, she overcame rigorous selection and grueling high-intensity training to stand among the country’s elite aerospace team. Her journey proves that Hong Kong talent — especially local women with persistent dedication — can excel in the nation’s most cutting-edge scientific fields.
Lai’s milestone achievement dismantles the outdated mindset that space exploration belongs only to external professionals. It strongly motivates Hong Kong researchers, university scholars and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students to actively participate in national space station projects, greatly boosting Hong Kong’s engagement in national aerospace development.
Looking ahead, the national 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) explicitly supports Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub. Boasting solid basic research capabilities, mature international talent cultivation systems and superior cross-border financing advantages, Hong Kong is well-positioned to integrate deeply into the national innovation layout.
Gone are the days when space dreams felt remote and impossible for young people in Hong Kong. Thanks to the Tiangong classroom and trailblazers like Lai, aerospace is no longer a distant spectacle but a promising path within reach.
