Sweltering heat continued to grip Hong Kong on Saturday as temperatures generally surged past 35 degrees Celsius across most districts, with Sheung Shui in the New Territories recording above 38C.

As of 2 pm, the maximum temperature recorded in Sheung Shui was 38.4C, while Tai Lung and Yuen Long Park logged a maximum of 37.3C and 37.2C, respectively. Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island also registered 37.1C.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, outer subsiding air from Tropical Cyclone Dolphin, which is moving toward the provinces of Zhejiang and northern Fujian, will bring persistently extreme heat to the city in the coming days.

The “very hot weather” warning has been in force since Wednesday morning.

High temperatures are forecast to continue along with a few showers next week, as a southwesterly airstream is expected to affect the coast of Guangdong province.
