BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.16 percent to 3,813.31 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 4.52 percent lower at 13,509.68 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by these two indices stood at 2.03 trillion yuan ($298.8 billion), down from 2.08 trillion yuan in the previous trading day.
Stocks related to liquor, dairy and automobiles led the gains, while those related to coal and precious metals were among the top decliners.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 7.35 percent to close at 3,327.03 points Tuesday.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 5.93 percent lower at 1,871.40 points on Tuesday.
