The Democratic Progressive Party authorities' attempts to seek "Taiwan independence" have no public support and will lead nowhere, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular news conference after Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle in response to the Taiwan authorities' decision to cancel visa facilitation measures for Cambodian nationals.

Taiwan's authority announced the decision on Friday, accusing Cambodia of "betraying Taiwan's goodwill" by voicing support for the one-China policy.

Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation responded that Cambodia regards Taiwan as a province of China and will not change its firm adherence to the one-China principle.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and this is a universal consensus of the international community," Lin said.

By using facilitation measures for personnel exchanges to coerce other countries into openly challenging the one-China principle, a basic norm governing international relations, the DPP has once again exposed the malicious nature of their separatist pursuit of "Taiwan independence", he said.

Cambodia's firm position fully demonstrates that the DPP's attempts to seek "Taiwan independence" are deeply unpopular and have no place in the world, Lin said.

"We warn the DPP authorities that the trend of history cannot be stopped and that 'Taiwan independence' is a dead end," he said.

The Chinese people's just cause of opposing separatist activities aimed at "Taiwan independence" and striving for national reunification will gain increasing understanding and support, Lin added.
