The Shenzhen Natural History Museum will open to the public on Tuesday, with a regular ticket priced at 80 yuan.
Located in the Yanzi Lake area of Shenzhen’s Pingshan District, the museum covers 105,300 square meters, making it the largest natural history museum in southern China.
The building’s design takes inspiration from a “river delta,” featuring five cone-shaped structures that blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape. A unique rooftop botanical garden, with a walkway spanning more than 600 meters, connects the museum to Yanziling Park and the Chi’aoshui Wetland trail, helping blur the boundary between the museum and its natural surroundings.
The museum houses eight permanent themed exhibition halls — Universe, Earth, Evolution, Dinosaurs, Humans, Biology, Ecology, and Homeland — which feature Shenzhen’s local environment.
A total of 7,461 specimens, 338 simulation models, and 194 exhibits are on display, presenting a narrative that runs from the cosmos to natural heritage closer to home.
Notable exhibits include fossils of Archaefructus (an ancient fruit), and Anchiornis (a four-winged feathered dinosaur), and a Cretaceous dinosaur fossil group from the Guangdong-Jiangxi region, highlighting China’s significant academic role in the study of paleontology and human evolution.
