Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Sunday evening offered his congratulations on the successful launch of the Shenzhou XXIII manned spacecraft, and sent his best wishes to the crew members, including Lai Ka-ying, the first payload expert from the special administrative region to join a national space mission.
At 11:08 pm on Sunday, the spacecraft lifted off aboard a Long March 2F Y23 carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China’s Gansu province and later entered its predetermined orbit after separating from the rocket.
Lee said the successful launch marked a moment of immense pride for Hong Kong, as Lai’s participation represents the first time a Hong Kong scientist has taken part in a manned spaceflight.
“With the strong support of the country, the HKSAR can transform from a 'supporter' of the country's great aerospace endeavors into an 'executor',” Lee said.
He added the flight was the first crewed mission of the national 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period. The national plan has clearly set out key strategies to develop a modernized industrial system and expedite the development into an aerospace power, Lee said.
"Through more than 30 years of the manned space program, the country has realized its grand blueprint of developing into an aerospace power through its unwavering determination, alongside its forward-looking vision, strategic planning, and unparalleled perseverance,” Lee said.
In a statement, the SAR government said it will leverage the historic mission to strengthen popular science education, showcase the nation’s aerospace achievements, and encourage young people to pursue innovation and technology careers.
Non-official members of the Executive Council also extended their congratulations. The council’s convenor, Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, said the mission was a landmark event for both the country and Hong Kong, and described Lai’s journey through selection and training as an example of resilience and determination.
Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong led a Hong Kong delegation to Jiuquan to attend the mission launch ceremony, joined by officials, industry experts and students.
