HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government on Friday announced a one-off extra allowance equal to the rate or allowance of one month for recipients of social security payments.

As set out in the 2026-27 Budget, the extra allowance will go to eligible recipients, including recipients of the standard rate of the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance, Old Age Allowance, Old Age Living Allowance and Disability Allowance.

Similar arrangements will apply to households receiving Working Family Allowance (WFA), the government said in a statement.

Those who were eligible for social security payments on April 29 – the date when the Legislative Council approved the Appropriation Bill 2026 – and households who submitted applications between Oct 1, 2025 to April 29, 2026, and were eventually approved with WFA, will be deemed eligible for the one-off extra allowance, according to the government.

About 1.76 million social security recipients and about 56,000 households in receipt of WFA are estimated to benefit from the move, involving a total of about HK$6,486 million in extra expenditure.

The recipients will receive the extra allowance starting from Friday, the government added.
