BEIJING - China is closely following the developments of the situation in Iran, and China opposes the use or threat of use of force in international relations, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday when asked to comment on heightened tension between the United States and Iran.

China has always advocated resolving problems via political and diplomatic means, Mao said at a regular news briefing.

The peoples of China and Iran have a longstanding traditional friendship. China supports the Iranian government and people in safeguarding their national stability and legitimate rights and interests, Mao added.

"China hopes that all parties will cherish peace, exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue. China is willing to continue playing its role as a responsible major country in this regard," she said.
