More than 100 Hong Kong residents reported feeling tremors after a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit Yangjiang, Guangdong on Friday afternoon, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

The HKO said an initial analysis showed that the quake struck at 2:28 pm with its epicenter located about 260 kilometers west-southwest of Hong Kong, and had a focal depth of about 11 kilometers.

“The Observatory received over a hundred locally felt reports of this earth tremor, the duration of which was a few seconds,” the HKO said.

It added that an initial estimate gave a local intensity of III (Three) on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, which means that the quake was felt by persons indoors, especially those on upper floors of buildings, with the vibrations similar to the passing of a truck.

On Jan 10 last year, residents in some parts of Hong Kong reported feeling tremors after a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck in the sea south of Shanwei in Guangdong.
