Hong Kong population increases for fourth straight year

Hong Kong’s population rose for the fourth consecutive year in 2025 to over 7.51 million as more global talents arrived to resettle in the city, official data showed on Thursday.

The provisional estimate of Hong Kong population’s was 7,510,800 at the end of last year, representing an increase of 10,200 or 0.1 percent from 7,500,600 at the end of 2024, according to the statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department.

A net inflow of 29,100 Hong Kong residents was recorded from end-2024 to end-2025, the department said.

This was bigger that the natural decrease of 18,900—due to 31,100 births and 50,000 deaths—recorded during the same period.

A Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government spokesperson said that the city’s overall population increased by end-2025 as it benefitted from various measures to attract talent and labor importation, which brought people to Hong Kong from around the world to offset the impact of natural population decrease.
