
KUALA LUMPUR - Chinese shuttlers continued their dominance on Day 3 of the Malaysia Open 2026 here on Thursday, as most of them advancing into the quarterfinals.
World No 1 Shi Yuqi outplayed India's Ayush Shetty 21-18, 18-21, 21-12 in an intense last 16 match at the Axiata Arena.
Meanwhile, four-time World Championships medalist Anders Antonsen of Denmark knocked out Canada's Victor Lai 21-16, 21-15, describing the matches so far as physically demanding.
"It was very physical from the very start to the very end, I'm 28 and suddenly facing guys who were 18 last week, a few weeks ago, 10 years younger than me. So I feel it's very motivating for me," he said.
Women's singles player Chen Yufei overcame Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand 19-21, 21-12, 21-9 to secure a spot in the last eight, while Chen's teammate Wang Zhiyi rolled over Lin Hsiang Ti of Chinese Taipei 21-15, 21-8.
Chinese women's doubles pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning easily overpowered Japan's Hirokami Rui and Hobara Sayaka 21-19, 21-9.
Mixed doubles duo Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping outplayed their teammates Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi 22-20, 21-16.

Huang said after the match that she looks forward to showcasing their level and capabilities to the fullest in every upcoming match, and they will face teammates Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui in the quarterfinals, as the latter overpowered their German opponents 13-21, 21-16, 21-10, with Chen Fanghui remarking that the pair has to rapidly adapt to their opponents' tactics.
"They came out with a lot of momentum. In the first game, they posed quite a big challenge and made things difficult for us. But in the second game, Guo Xinwa and I kept adjusting and mobilizing ourselves, and we managed to turn things around," she told Xinhua.
Mixed doubles duo Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin also advanced into the last eight.

Chinese players also saw some setbacks, with men's singles shuttler Lu Guangzu, men's doubles duo Chen Xujun and Liu Yang, and women's singles player Gao Fangjie failing to make the cut, while women's singles player Han Yue and women's doubles pair Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian had walkovers.
Chen Xujun said after the match that, as a new pair, they delivered a relatively steady performance on the day, while noting that details on court still need further refinement in subsequent matches.
The Malaysia Open runs from Jan 6 to 11.
