KYIV/BERLIN - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that Ukraine stands ready to agree on security guarantees based on NATO Article 5 as a part of a compromise in the peace process, the Ukrinform news agency reported.

"From the very beginning, Ukraine's desire was to join NATO, these are real security guarantees. Some partners from the United States and Europe did not support this direction," he told reporters.

"Article 5-like guarantees from the United States and from European partners, as well as from other countries -- Canada, Japan ... would provide an opportunity to prevent another arrival of Russian troops," Zelensky said, adding, "It is already a compromise on our part."

Zelensky said he was not yet ready to disclose specific details of the proposed security guarantees, saying they would be known in a day or two.

Zelensky also said that the US-proposed plan to establish a "free economic zone" in parts of the eastern Donbas region is unfair.

Zelensky said it remains unclear who would manage the proposed economic zone and added that Ukraine must seek alternative ways to end the conflict with Russia if the current peace talks fail.

The United States suggested a compromise in which the Ukrainian Armed Forces would withdraw from the region, and Russia would not enter parts of eastern Ukraine, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency quoted Zelensky as saying.

"We need to pull ourselves together, find another approach and do everything possible to end this war," Zelensky said.

Zelensky arrived in Berlin on Sunday afternoon for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders.

The German government said in a statement earlier this week that Merz would receive Zelensky on Monday for German-Ukrainian economic talks and an exchange on the status of peace negotiations in Ukraine. "Numerous European heads of state and government, as well as the leaders of the European Union and NATO, will join the discussions," it said.

German newspaper Bild reported that Zelensky may also hold talks with representatives of US President Donald Trump, but did not elaborate further.
