The agriculture and fisheries sector should bank on technology to achieve sustainable development, two lawmaker candidates running in the constituency said on Thursday at an election forum.

Jonathan Chan Pok-chi said that the sector is currently undergoing a technological transformation. He expressed his commitment to addressing long-standing challenges, pledging to collaborate with fishermen, farmers, and cross-sector partners to forge a path toward sustainable development.

He said he aims to establish a comprehensive service platform for enterprises going global during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, seamlessly integrating Hong Kong’s international service expertise with the policy advantages of the Chinese mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Yeung Sheung-chun said the Greater Bay Area presents significant development opportunities for the sector, which serves as a pathway for industry upgrading and modernization. Yeung said that technological investment is crucial for achieving this transformation. A key future direction involves applying technological innovations to industry production to boost capacity and competitiveness, he added.

At the same time, efforts must focus on establishing local fisheries and agriculture brands while promoting food safety, Yeung said. Along with modernization, attention must be paid to traditional fish farmers and small-scale producers to ensure more balanced and diversified industry development, he added.
