BERLIN - The German government on Wednesday rejected a recent US report alleging a deterioration of human rights in Germany.

Steffen Meyer, deputy government spokesperson, told a press conference in Berlin that Germany is a well-established democracy with a very broad protection for freedom of expression.

Germany has a very high level of freedom of expression, and will continue to defend this, he said.

"We do not see freedom of the press and opinion restricted in Germany," said Josef Hinterseher, spokesperson with the German foreign ministry.

The report issued by the US Department of State claims that the human rights situation in Germany worsened in 2024, noting "significant human rights issues" including restrictions on freedom of expression and violence motivated by antisemitism.
