Israeli parliament’s claim of “Israeli sovereignty” over the West Bank of Palestine has drawn more condemnation across the world as the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people is widely acknowledged alongside the “indefensible” sufferings in Gaza.
The Israeli Knesset voted 71-13 on July 23 for a non-binding motion in favor of annexing the West Bank, which Israel refers to as “Judea and Samaria”, as “an inseparable part” of Israel and called for “applying Israeli sovereignty to Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley”.
The motion was declarative and has no direct legal implications. It quickly drew condemnation by Islamic countries.
The Spanish Government has become one of the latest states to condemn Israel’s move, which it said “disregards the fundamental principles and provisions of international law” and the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice on July 19 last year that “determines that the occupation is illegal”.

“The motion also undermines the basis for the implementation of a two-State solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people, peace in the region and the security of Israel, by ignoring the commitments made by Israel and Palestine since the Madrid Conference and the Oslo Process,” said the statement publicized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain on July 24.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Israeli motion was negatively perceived in Moscow as it “actually prejudges the outcome of negotiations on the final status of the Palestinian territories” and “runs counter to Israel's commitments” under the Oslo Process, as well as the provisions of relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the UN Security Council.
“Israel’s move is clearly undermining its own position in international relations,” Arie Afriansyah, a professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia, told China Daily. Israel will face more enemies rather than getting any sympathies from other states.

“There’s nothing of legal basis to justify Israel new move to assert sovereignty over West Bank,” he added. “That is showing that Israel is not serious for the two-state solution.”
The Arab League and the 57-nation Organization of Islamic Cooperation in a joint statement on July 24 condemned the Israeli parliament’s approval of “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied West Bank.
The Arab and Muslim-majority countries’ joint statement said it considered the Israeli move a “blatant and unacceptable violation of international law and a flagrant breach of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions”.
They also reaffirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stressing that this unilateral Israeli move has no legal effect and cannot alter the legal status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The group also called on the international community, including the UN Security Council and all relevant actors “to shoulder their legal and moral responsibilities”.

Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, said in a statement released on his X account on July 24, that the suffering and starvation unfolding in Gaza “is unspeakable and indefensible”.
He said he would hold an emergency with E3 partners – France and Germany – on Friday to discuss “what we can do urgently to stop the killing and get people the food they desperately need”. “We are clear that statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people,” he said.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement posted on its X account, “The Israeli Knesset’s decision is proof of the failure of any international wagers on Israel’s willingness to engage with the two-state solution.”
“What is required now is for the international community to impose peace on the occupying power in accordance with international legitimacy and UN resolutions,” it added.
The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement called Israeli parliament’s non-binding vote on the annexation of the occupied West Bank a “dangerous escalation”, Al Jazeera reported.
In a statement published on Telegram, the group said the move was a “clear disregard for the international community” and a way for Israel to implement “its criminal plans targeting the land of Palestine and its people”.
