Hong Kong residents experienced scorching heat on Friday as the maximum temperature across the city rose to around 35 degrees Celsius.

As of 2:50 pm, the maximum temperature at Yuen Long Park in the northwestern New Territories reached 36.6°C while Tai Lung and Ta Kwu Ling also had 36°C.

With the very hot weather warning in force since 6:45 am the previous day, winds were weak and the weather was extremely hot over Guangdong, the Hong Kong Observatory said on Friday.

The city will see “sunny periods and extremely hot in the afternoon with a maximum temperature of around 35 degrees,” said the forecaster.

A thunderstorm warning was issued at 1:40 pm, as thundery showers triggered by high temperatures were expected to occur over the city.

In the next couple of days, a broad trough of low pressure will affect the central and northern parts of the South China Sea and an area of low pressure may form over it during the weekend, according to the HKO.

“The broad trough of low pressure is expected to move northwards gradually towards the coast of southern China in the middle to latter parts of next week, bringing showers to the region,” it said.

Meanwhile, the HKO said tropical cyclone Co-May was centered about 1040 kilometers southwest of Okinawa at Friday noon and was forecast to move northeast at about 36 km per hour across the seas east of Taiwan towards the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands.
