Extremely hot weather in HK as Sheung Shui records 36.8°C

Hong Kong sweltered in extremely hot weather on Sunday afternoon as temperatures rose to around 35 degrees Celsius in many areas of the city, with the mercury reaching 36.8°C in Sheung Shui in the New Territories.   

The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Very Hot Weather warning on Sunday morning and urged residents to drink sufficient water and take precautions against heat stroke.

“Locally, it was extremely hot in the afternoon. Temperatures over many places rose to around 35 degrees,” the observatory said.

The observatory also canceled all tropical cyclone warnings on Sunday afternoon after Typhoon Danas moved away from the city.

The maximum temperature in Yuen Long Park in the New Territories reached 36.2°C while Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island had 36.1°C.

Peng Chau island recorded 35.6°C while Sha Tin logged 35.5°C. Tai Po, Sham Shui Po, and Kwun Tong had a maximum temperature of 35.3°C.

The Home Affairs Department opened temporary heat shelters for people to take refuge from the hot weathert while the Labour Department urged employers and employees to take precautions against the heat.

The observatory said the city's weather was forecast to remain very hot on Monday and Tuesday.

Hong Kong was expected to have sunny periods on Monday with the maximum temperature in urban areas reaching 34°C and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories, the observatory said.

It added that the territory could expect unsettled weather with occasional showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday.
