HK COVID caseload rises to 5,697 as 9 more die

HONG KONG – Hong Kong on Thursday logged 5,697 new COVID-19 cases, including 495 imported ones, as nine more people diagnosed with the disease passed away.

The new deaths with COVID pushed the city’s tally during the fifth wave or since Dec 31, 2021 to 10,288, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said in a statement.

Among the imported cases, 252 were identified at Hong Kong International Airport while 170 tested positive during days 1 to 3 of their arrival in the city and the remaining 73 between fourth and seventh days, the CHP added.

The Public Health Laboratory Services Branch identified 213 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, seven of BA.4.6, 11 of BF.7 and 32 of BQ.1.1 among the imported cases.

Meanwhile, 18 cases of sub-lineage XBB, 15 of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2 and 25 of BQ.1.1 were also detected among the local cases.

The city recorded 4,649 new infections and four related deaths on Tuesday and 5,068 cases and 13 deaths the following day.

Ingrid Yeung tests positive

Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung is undergoing home quarantine as one of her domestic helpers tested COVID positive via a rapid antigen test (RAT), the government announced.

In addition to wearing masks and following disease prevention measures at work, Yeung has been taking nucleic acid tests regularly.

She tested negative in a nucleic acid test and a RAT both on Wednesday and Thursday.

During the quarantine period, Yeung will be working from home.
