Experts and business leaders in Hong Kong are entertaining the idea of exploring opportunities from and in alignment with progressive national development strategies, to sustain the momentum of development and fulfill the expectations communicated by President Xi Jinping in his speech on Friday.
Xi’s speech took place at a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and swearing in the HKSAR’s sixth-term government.
“One country, two systems” was a constant thread running through Xi’s address.
President Xi Jinping also stressed the importance of “patriots administrating Hong Kong”, saying that it is important to keep the power to administer the HKSAR firmly in the hands of patriots and at no time should the principle be allowed to be compromised
Hailing “one country, two systems” as an unprecedented and monumental construct in history, Xi determined that the principle has stood the test of time over the past 25 years since the establishment of the HKSAR, which is proved by Hong Kong’s constant growth and its prowess to attract people and capital. There’s no reason to alter or forgo such an instrumental principle, said Xi, stressing the need to fully, faithfully and unwaveringly implement the policy.

The president also stressed the importance of “patriots administrating Hong Kong”, saying that it is important to keep the power to administer the HKSAR firmly in the hands of patriots and at no time should the principle be allowed to be compromised.

Wong Yuk-shan, chairman of the Research Grants Council, described the “one country, two systems” principle as the anchor of Hong Kong’s financial security over the past 25 years. “Under the Basic Law and the central government’s full support, Hong Kong’s economy and financial sector have witnessed robust growth since it returned to the motherland,” said Wong. “This is clearly shown by the city’s gross domestic product which doubled to more than HK$2.8 trillion ($356.85 billion), as well as the stock market’s capitalization which rose twelvefold to over HK$40 trillion in 25 years.”
