HONG KONG - Residents in Hong Kong can finally go shopping with their long-awaited consumption vouchers to boost the local economy, after a long fight with the coronavirus.

On Thursday, the residents received HK$5,000 e-vouchers under the 2022 Consumption Voucher Scheme.

The government reminded members of the public that the e-vouchers are valid for seven months so there is no urgency to immediately go out and splurge amid the pandemic

Consumers using accounts of AlipayHK, Tap & Go or WeChat Pay HK will get the full amount while those who use Octopus cards will get theirs in two instalments.

Various retail stores have also offered shopping discounts to customers who used the e-vouchers.

Noting that the pandemic situation in the city remained severe, the government reminded members of the public that the vouchers are valid for seven months so there is no urgency to immediately go out and splurge.

It is expected to cost the government about HK$66.4 billion ($8.5 billion) and is projected to boost Hong Kong’s GDP by 1.7 percent.
