Huai Wei (left, kneeling), a doctor at the emergency department of Peking University Third Hospital, trains with four other colleagues of the Alpine skiing medical support team for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Chongli district, Zhangjiakou, Hebei province. Since 2018, they have trained for at least four weeks every winter and are China’s first batch of doctors to work at the event’s Alpine skiing course in Yanqing district, Beijing. Should an accident occur, if for example, a skier falls badly, then they need to run from a designated area with a medical backpack weighing 15 kilograms and reach the fallen athlete within four minutes. They also have to tackle the elements once on the scene. Gloves will have to be taken off as they treat the athlete and they must be ready to carry out emergency procedures on the spot. They hope to share their experience in other international Alpine skiing events. (ZHANG YUWEI / XINHUA)
