HONG KONG - The Hong Kong government cordoned off areas in Jordan and Sham Shui Po on Monday night for targeted testing as the city reported 32 new virus cases.

In separate statements, the government said it set up restricted areas around Man Ying Building, 2-24 Man Ying Street, Ferry Point in Jordan at 7 pm and around Hang On Building, 88-90 Fuk Wing Street/46A-46C Kweilin Street in Sham Shui Po an hour and a half later.

Government personnel put up temporary specimen collection stations and reminded residents to remain in their premises and undergo compulsory testing.

The government said it intended to finish both operations by 7 am Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the city's new COVID-19 cases on Monday included 28 local infections, bringing the city’s tally to 10,667.

Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School will go through a COVID-19 screening after two students there were found infected.

Six of the new local infections remained untraceable while more than 20 people tested preliminarily positive for the coronavirus

Four cases were imported - three from Pakistan and one from the Philippines, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Centre for Health Protection’s communicable disease branch, said at a briefing.

Six of the local infections remained untraceable, Chuang said. There were more than 20 people who tested preliminarily positive for the coronavirus.

Two Form Six students at Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School were found with the virus, Chuang said. One is among the three preliminarily positive cases detected via the government’s mandatory testing at Wai Lee Building in Quarry Bay. The other student, also a resident of the building, had been earlier confirmed as infected.

Chuang said the duo, who didn't know each other, returned to school to take exams in early February at the same hall before they developed symptoms. Around 130 students, five teachers and a few other support staffers would be quarantined, while all 700 students and teachers of the school would be tested.

Chuang said the precautionary measures were in order as CHP was yet to determine if the two students got infected at their block of flats or at the school.

A person who tested positive during the government's overnight screening exercise at Cheong Lok Mansion in Hung Hom was found to be a patient who had contracted the virus earlier and had recovered, Chuang said.

Seven patients were logged at the Quarry Bay premises, six of them living in units on different floors with the prefix 04.

Yuen Kwok-yung, a top microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong, said vertical transmission had occurred in this building, suggesting all the residents of units with the prefix 04 be evacuated.

After inspecting the building with health officials, Yuen, who also advises the government’s expert panel on COVID-19, appealed to residents to comply with mandatory testing notices at the earliest.
