White House confirms US soldier detained in Russia

WASHINGTON - The White House confirmed on Monday that a US soldier was detained in Russia over the weekend.

According to reports by US media, a US soldier currently stationed in South Korea was detained in Russia, where he traveled on his own.

The detention happened over the weekend and the soldier was accused of stealing.

John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council, said during a daily press briefing at the White House that the US government was "aware of this case".

Kirby referred reporters to the Department of Defense for details, saying he "can't really say much about it right now".
