HONG KONG – Heavy downpours brought by a trough of low pressure battered most parts of Hong Kong on Friday, prompting the city’s forecaster to issue an amber rainstorm warning signal in the morning.

The Hong Kong Observatory canceled the amber rainstorm signal – the lowest of a three-tier warning system – at 1:45 pm, but said the thunderstorm warning would remain until 3:30 pm with squally thunderstorms likely.

Due to the influence of a trough of low pressure in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary, Hong Kong experienced intense thundery showers on Friday.

The observatory said the weather will be mainly cloudy with a few showers and squally thunderstorms on Friday afternoon and night

The HKO reported that most parts of the territory saw rainfall of more than 30 millimeters, with rainfall in Sai Kung and Sha Tin districts recorded over 100 mm.

The Labour Department reminded employers and contractors to take suitable safety measures and should avoid assigning employees to carry out electrical work or handle electrical plants.

The observatory said the weather will be mainly cloudy with a few showers and squally thunderstorms on Friday afternoon and night.

Occasional showers and thunderstorms are expected over the weekend and will ease off next Monday with the trough weakening.
