Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Tuesday Hong Kong hopes to lure more visitors with various events and through the experience gained, during the upcoming Labour Day “golden week” which starts on May 1.

Speaking before a weekly Executive Council meeting, he said the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau held a meeting with representatives of other government departments and the tourism industry last month to discuss ways of dealing with the expected big inflow of travelers during the five-day holiday break on the Chinese mainland.

Information on the flow of people and traffic at different checkpoints will be distributed for both Hong Kong residents and visitors via multiple channels, and relevant arrangements will be announced soon.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board will host a series of events to attract tourists, including fireworks displays during the “golden week”. It will also provide visitors with information on the city’s attractions and unique features, such as the “Day x Night Vibes@18 Districts” - a government-led campaign featuring numerous cultural and leisure activities across the city.

Lee said he is glad that the tourism, catering and hotel sectors have improved their products and services to meet the new consumption modes of visitors.

The HKTB said on Tuesday the special administrative region recorded an almost 40-percent year-on-year growth in visitor numbers last month. Tourist arrivals went up by 1.5 times, reaching 11.2 million, in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2023.
