Chinese mainland reports 38 new imported COVID-19 cases

BEIJING/WUHAN/HARBIN - The Chinese mainland reported 38 new imported cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 951, the National Health Commission said Monday.

Among the newly reported imported cases, 20 were in Heilongjiang, seven in Guangdong, five in Shanghai and one each in Beijing, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Shandong, Sichuan and Gansu, said Mi Feng, a commission spokesman, at a press conference. 

As of Sunday, the mainland had reported a total of 951 imported cases. Among them, 258 had been discharged from the hospital after recovery, and  693 were being treated in hospital with 22 in severe condition, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

No death had been reported from imported cases.

The commission said that 88 people, all from outside of the Chinese mainland, were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

All of the 20 newly reported imported cases in Heilongjiang, including four in serious condition, were all Chinese citizens returning from Russia, bringing the total number of imported cases in Heilongjiang to 42.

The province also reported an increase of 28 imported asymptomatic COVID-19 cases on Sunday, who were all Chinese. Twenty-six came from Russia, one from Canada and one from the Philippines.

The province saw no new confirmed or suspected COVID-19 case infected locally on Sunday.

No new cases in Hubei

In Hubei province, no new confirmed cases were reported Sunday although there was an increase of 35 asymptomatic COVID-19 patients, the Health Commission of Hubei said.

The province recorded one more death, which was reported in the provincial capital of Wuhan on Monday.

After ruling out 45 cases, the total number of asymptomatic patients in Hubei had reached 705, all of whom had been put under medical observation by the end of Sunday.

Sixty-nine COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery Sunday in the province. Among the 577 patients being treated in hospital, 149 were still in severe condition and 85 others in critical condition.

Hubei has so far reported 67,803 confirmed COVID-19 cases in total, including 50,008 in Wuhan.

One new domestic case on mainland

All in all, 39 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland Sunday, the National Health Commission said. The one new domestic case was reported in Guangdong province.

Also on Sunday, one death and 10 new suspected cases, all imported ones, were reported on the mainland. 

According to the commission, 114 people were discharged from hospital after recovery on Sunday, while the number of severe cases decreased by 30 to 265.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 81,708 by Sunday, including 1,299 patients who were still being treated, 77,078 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,331 people who died of the disease.

The commission said that 88 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus, all of whom were from abroad.

It added that 16,154 close contacts were still under medical observation. On Sunday, 2,151 people were released from medical observation.

Also on Sunday, 78 new asymptomatic COVID-19 cases were reported on the mainland, including 40 imported ones. Five asymptomatic cases, all of which were imported ones, were re-categorized as confirmed infections, and 50 were discharged from medical observation including four imported cases, according to the commission.

The commission said 1,047 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation, including 275 from abroad.

The risks of imported cases from neighboring countries have continued to rise, putting greater pressure on the prevention of imported cases, Mi said.

He pointed out that many provinces have reported local COVID-19 patients infected by imported cases.

Mi reminded the public to remain vigilant against a rebound in the local outbreak.

By Sunday, 890 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 44 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 363 in Taiwan including five deaths.

A total of 206 patients in Hong Kong, 10 in Macao and 54 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
